Release Date: 12 May 2005
In a competition held by the News of the World newspaper, Winchester photographer Maddie Attenborough scooped first prize with a delightful photograph of an Andover couple and their new baby, Matthew.
The family photography competition was organised jointly by the newspaper and the Master Photographers Association (MPA). Maddie's photograph was judged to be the best in the country and has won her a £1000 cash prize.
The winning family - Rachel and Kenneth Neilson and their eight-month-old son Matthew - are the proud recipients of a family holiday worth £1000. Maddie has been taking studio portraits for 23 years and is a qualified member of the Master Photographers Association and the British Institute of Professional Photography. Her studio specialises in portraits of babies, children, families, groups, makeovers and pets.
Maddie says of her win: "I couldn't believe it when the text message came through. I was on holiday in Australia visiting my son at the time and couldn't stop smiling all day! I thought when I took the picture that it could be a winner, and I'm really delighted for the Neilson family too."
The winning shot was taken on a digital camera, off the tripod, to give artistic flexibility, though Maddie still takes many of her pictures on traditional film.
In a double whammy, another photograph of Matthew on his own has won the Cherubs baby photo competition run by Maddie's studio as part of an MPA national photography promotion.
