Student Winner Announced
Cleveland College of Art & Design has scooped top honours in the Fujifilm
Student Awards 2007. Student Jill Cole is the overall winner - with the title
Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2007 - while the college itself also
wins for submitting the most images.
In a closely fought contest this year, Jill's image of a paintball competitor
was described as a 'very considered portrait' by the judges, Perry Curties and
Rob Crane - editors of 125 Magazine, and Jerry Deeney, Marketing & Business
Development Specialist, for Fujifilm Professional. Jill wins the £1,000
cash prize and her college wins £500-worth of Fujifilm Professional film.
The theme for this year's Awards was 'Recreation' and the entries showed a 'diverse
mix', according to the judges. "Jill's winning shot is technically a great
image," said Rob, "she considered the brief and it's unusual that
she chose a male-dominated aggressive past-time, yet managed to achieve a soft
and gentle portrait. The shallow depth of field really adds to its impact."
Students were asked to depict how people relax in the 21st Century - photographing
people at leisure, relaxing and doing the things they enjoy. All the 1,000 submitted
entries had to have been shot on Fujifilm Professional film. All images were
then scanned and submitted online and the selected 20 Merit winners were then
asked to submit a 10x8 inch print for final round judging.
The judging was very close call, with Brighton University's Oliver Perrott's
off-roading image winning him the accolade of 'Highly Commended' by the judges.
Merits were awarded to:
Tom Hatton, Anthony Hopwood, Mikael Buck, Kayleigh Young, Carolyn White, Jo
Gane, Oliver Perrott (2), Jill Cole, Simon Tupper, James Andrews/Rachel Brian
(2), Will Edgecombe, Felicity Crawshaw, Sarah Amy Smith, Noemie Goudal, Luke
Gould, Helen Devine (2) and Brenda Burrell.
The winning images will be available to view online at: www.fujifilmstudentawards.co.uk
from 22 June 2007.
