Fujifilm Student Awards 2008 winners announced
Fujifilm Professional has announced the winner of the 2008 Fujifilm Student Awards, David Wala from Newcastle College.
This year’s Awards were run in conjunction with Penguin Books and the brief was to provide a cover for the re-issued version of Ralph Ellison’s 1952 masterpiece, Invisible Man. David’s winning image will now grace the cover when the book is released as part of Penguin’s Modern Classics series. In addition to this amazing prize, David has been named as Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2008. He also collects a library of 100 Penguin Classics titles and a copy of the book, ‘Seven Hundred Penguins’.
Nearly 1,000 entries were submitted to the Award’s website, www.fujifilmstudentawards.co.uk, each one taken on Fujifilm Professional film. From these initial entries, 30 Merit winners were selected and asked to submit a print for final judging. Each Merit winner received 10 rolls of Fujicolor PRO160S professional colour negative film in 35mm or 120 format, one Penguin Classic paperback book of their choice and a copy of the book, ‘Seven Hundred Penguins’.
Students from Sandwell College submitted the most entries; therefore the college receives £250 worth of Fujifilm Professional film and 100 Penguin Classics titles for their library.
The judging panel was made up of Jim Stoddart (Penguin Press Art Director), Adam Freudenheim (Penguin Classics Publisher) and Simon Bainbridge (Editor of the British Journal of Photography) who took into consideration the artistic merit of each image, plus how well it will work on the book cover.
Jim Stoddart paid this tribute to David’s winning image: “The eventual winner really stood out, it was the most impactful and eye-catching and has the look of a really iconic book cover. There is great texture in the flag that helps to give the image depth. A great deal of creative thinking went into the production of this image.”
The judges also singled out David’s college, Newcastle for particular praise: “All the submissions from Newcastle College students were excellent, they really worked closely to the
brief.”
Jerry Deeney from Fujifilm Professional was delighted with the tie-in with Penguin Books: “This was the first time in the Award’s 23 year history that we have worked alongside a commercial partner and it has worked really well for both parties. Penguin were able to provide a real commercial brief and the prize really is one that money can’t buy. We’re already working with Penguin for the 2009 Student Awards and we have selected ‘Silent Spring’ by Rachel Carson for next year’s competition. The 2009 Fujifilm Student Awards will be launched in September.”
The winning image, together with the runners-up are available to view at www.fujifilmstudentawards.co.uk
